The answer, as surprising as it may seem, is that it all starts with first-year students.

Visual Arts (ba)

A solid introduction to art courses is not for the faint of heart. Students should be introduced to ideas and content and given time to develop basic skills.

Today, I’m going to share some suggested lessons, programs, and methods to help give you a great introduction to your art program.

First, students must have a real understanding of artistic elements as they are the main elements of composition. All seven elements of art are important and should be explained and explored.

Students should understand how they organize their elements through design principles. Once the elements are well understood, one can consciously think about movement, rhythm, balance, variety, contrast, unity, repetition and emphasis. These courses will develop their understanding and skills and take their work to the next level.

Meet The Faculty And Staff

In the first project, students show who they are through the symbols, colors, shapes and designs around their names. Students creatively manipulate mixed media to express their personalities and show who they are.

Introduce the course by having students list their interests, create thumbnails and start thinking about the different mediums they might want to use.

This program gives you the opportunity to really reflect on who they are and measure the level of the class in terms of technical and creative abilities.

In this two-part line course, students begin to learn about the importance of line—especially contour lines. You can discuss the definition and importance of contour lines by looking closely at the lines that define the object. Students learn and practice blind contouring, semi-blind contouring, and contouring techniques.

Start by having your students draw ten sketches of their hands in their sketchbooks, then choose one to recreate on a larger scale. They drew outlines with graphite on black paper by hand. Students then apply glue to the pencil lines, re-emphasizing the outline through the quality of the line. The next day, students looked at the unique shapes created and filled the spaces with chalk, using glue lines as outlines.

Students can continue to use the transcripts in the sketchbook for profile research. In this part of the project, students will observe the lines and shapes of faces and draw a sketch of the person sitting in front of them.

Students draw outline “partner photo” on white drawing paper with negative space lines. Students check their pencil lines with Sharpie pens (thick and thin), focusing on line quality to show variety.

Students use 50% crayons and 50% markers to color their shapes, making sure to separate the color from the newly created shapes.

Everyone is teaching the color wheel – let’s face it – color is a very important element in almost every piece of art. However, I think it’s important to teach the color wheel creatively. Students learn color theory in this project!

These are the color theory concepts that I introduce to my students, although sometimes others introduce them through questions or discussions:

Any material students want to use to create their color wheel is fair game for this project. I’ve had students sew, make edible color wheels, make models, make muddy color wheels, use mixed media, melt crayons, etc… the possibilities are endless! The final piece is presented to the class, explaining what the students have created and how their colors are mixed.

After using colors on their creative color wheel, students can go on to apply this knowledge to paintings they create themselves. They can create monochromatic works (using their knowledge of values) or other color schemes (using their knowledge of colors from previous projects!). This gives them the freedom to be creative and apply what they have learned so far.

This project is a good introduction to the importance of creating 2D art. In this project, students use line, shape, line quality and repetition to create interesting patterns and stunning designs.

In this project, students integrate their direct observation skills, value skills, and color theory skills into an observational painting triptych.

You can start this lesson by discussing the importance of direct observation in art. Each student will choose a stationary object to draw three times. As they work, they will learn to measure and focus positive and negative space to find the right proportions using lines and shapes. Every piece is the same, but students can still make different artistic choices that make their work unique. Students make three paintings and complete them in three different ways.

This chapter begins with an important discussion of the value of works of art. After creating a seven-note scale, students learn to make a grid and draw a graph using the values. I find it best for students to work slowly, preferably in reverse, so they don’t feel pressured to draw specific objects. I remind them that they are just drawing lines, shapes and values, and if they do it right, their objects will appear. It’s a simple technique that everyone can succeed with.

This bookkeeping class is the culmination of the courses taken throughout the semester. This is a fantastic form of true evaluation. Students had three weeks to write the books, and the results were nothing short of astonishing. Check out full information on how to prepare these books.

Lessons are not the only part of a successful introduction to the arts. Students need to learn how to work independently, explore their ideas and creativity, and most importantly, how to present and talk about their work! Throughout the semester, we will work on visual journals, spend time in the studio, and conduct ongoing class reviews.

The Visual Journal is a weekly quick-graded sketchbook assignment. In my room, I discuss their journals one-on-one with students. This allows for a one-on-one understanding of student development. Conversations about their direct observation drawing skills as well as their handling of the medium and understanding of composition are critical to their artistic development.

Visual Arts @ Mit Part 2

Each assignment is based on an open-ended prompt. In addition, students must include three things: direct observation of the drawing, collage or text, and a composition that successfully fills the space on the page.

Students deserve time to explore and manipulate different media, and art classes are the perfect place for them to play! Over the years, I have seen students learn a lot from their open studio days. They learn to paint with marker strokes and blend oil pastels. They learn how to explore the joys of watercolor and the frustrations of charcoal. Giving them time to learn and use different mediums will positively impact their work. Students need time to explore because this is where learning happens!

Getting students comfortable enough to discuss their art and that of their peers can be a challenge. There are many effective methods of critique, including one-on-one workshops, daily reflection and public speaking.

One strategy for introducing art students to their first review is “2 Glow and a Grow.” I like to move quickly around the room and place their drawings on the lamps while students work on it. After they observed everyone’s art, they had the opportunity to write “gloss” (things that worked well) and “grow” (things that needed work) on sticky notes. Then leave these sticky notes on the artwork. I recommend that each student write at least three. This notebook room gives everyone a chance to reflect and discuss the art being created and reinforce important artistic vocabulary!

Introduction To Art: Design, Context, And Meaning

Over the years, I’ve seen Intro to Art students learn and apply all this new knowledge. With fast lessons and freedom to explore, their art becomes a solid foundation for the portfolio they need to grow.

A solid understanding of the arts is key to the success of subsequent courses. Each advanced course gives students more freedom to create some amazing work in AP studio classes. So, think about what you will teach and how you will teach your introductory art course. You will be frustrated with the results!
