How Much Fabric To Cover An Office Chair – You may remember a post I wrote when I first started blogging about how I transformed my not-so-beautiful home office chair with fabric. About 6 years ago I had a chair that was printed in black and white.

The fabric back holds up well – the seat is thin and I nailed it. It’s actually better to wear than I thought it would be, but it’s time to give it a whole new color scheme in my studio or in my studio

This black and white office chair cover has served me for years…but it’s a bit worn. Goodbye, black and white chairs.

Hello summer fresh colors! I found a $7 woven cotton rug at HomeGoods and used it for the back cover. The green fabric on the bottom is from JoAnn’s.

I use cotton cloth for the seat of the chair and cotton rug for the back.

I even remodeled my office chair with colorful beach towels. So don’t think you can just use the fabric space of a fabric store.

1. Fold the cushion in half, fold the right sides together, and sew a seam on each side.

1. Lay the fabric face down on the work surface. Central pillow on top. Start at the front of the seat cushion – pull the fabric up around the seat, then turn the raw edges over and staple. Repeat on each side of the pillow, making sure the fabric is taut and straight (if patterned).

3. Pull the fabric away from the corners, then join it, and pull it tight. Continue working around the corners until all the fabric is pinched and folded and there are no bunches or folds.

If you have a crease – just pull a little and it will go away. If you’re using a square seat, you can fold the fabric into a gift wrap style and staple it together. Cut off the excess fabric, then fold the raw edges and sew together. Repeat for other angles.

Attached to the chair. Everything is upholstered – smooth and tight so the fabric doesn’t move when you sit on it.

If you want to change the color of your office chair, the easiest way is to use spray paint.

Since the bottom of my chair is mostly plastic, I used Rust-Oleum spray paint to make the plastic. It has a subtle sheen and I am very happy with how it lasts and covers.

I put a rag on the deck and sprayed the outside of the chairs with water. At first I left the cushions but then removed them and covered all the cracks in the chair with paint. The pads are easy to remove with a screwdriver.

I originally used a primer, but it’s really meant to be applied to plastic when you don’t have special plastic paint. The Rust-Oluem plastic paint label states that it does not require primer.

I applied a coat of primer and let it dry, then added about 4 thin coats of paint throughout the day until it was covered in black.

Now that my chair is done, I’ll move on to the other items I’d like to have done in this room – shelves – file drawers – rugs and wires. I can’t wait to get started.

If you want to check out the tutorial for the first cover I made for the chair, you can find it here:

.You can see a white and pink office chair. It used to be black and red. I painted the base white and covered the seat and back with white and pink cowhide fabric. I’ll share how I transformed my boring (but super comfortable) chair with custom sofa covers and spray paint.

Also, don’t forget to check out the update below and I’ll let you know what this chair looks like after two years of use.

Last Christmas my son-in-law gave Ken and I matching chairs. We only have one, and it’s broken.

I love it because it’s so (I mean so) comfortable and actually one of the best I’ve had. My back is so much better with this chair!

But it’s all dark and gritty and on hot days I feel like I’m stuck on it and it hurts when I stand up 😛

So the other day I decided to decorate it with polka dot fabric, primer and paint.

My main idea was to make a cover that can be easily removed and washed because as long as it’s fabric, it gets dirty.

I used velcro on the backrest and elastic on the seat so I can remove them later.

The lower armrest of the chair is a little worn, so now is the perfect time to update it.

I work in an office, craft room, so I’ll show you everything I’m working on (I have 3 unfinished projects right now)

Since all chairs are different, I’ll give you all general advice if you’re looking to upgrade your own.

For the cover I used about 4 yards of outdoor cotton fabric (but you need to measure the height of the backrest and seat – don’t worry about the width) + about 1 yard of Velcro and about 1 yard of 1/2″ elastic.

First you need to decide which surface you want to paint on, in my case I have plastic and metal pieces.

So I bought a spray primer specifically for metal and another spray primer for plastic to give the best coverage for each surface.

You will need to remove the chair using whatever tools are included, in my case the chair was ready to be assembled with a hex key.

I separate all the different parts so that I can spray them according to the material. And make covers for the seat, back and armrests.

The armrest is the only part I can’t easily remove the (washable) cover since mine doesn’t have room to put anything if I add elastic to the bottom like I do on the seat. I don’t have room to screw it to the pad.

So I just iron the fabric, so when I need to wash it, I have to use staples, and when it’s clean, I repeat the process.

As for the seat, I put the part that needs to be covered on the reverse side of the fabric so I can shape it (do this and you’ll see the seat covered when done).

I measured the 5″ fold from the top edge of the seat (remember the seat faces back) (this will be the elastic edge).

I then pleated in the corners, pinned them in place (you can also see them already sewn on the back in the picture below), and sewed in the folds. This greatly improves bottom aggregation (due to elasticity).

After sewing the sides together, you will have a cup shape left on the seat.

You’ll need to make a 2″ fold in the top of the bowl and sew it up, leaving a little opening for the elastic to stretch. Tie the rubber band into a knot and finish the connection with the seam.

You now have a seat cover, but if your seat is like mine, you’ll need to make small holes in the sides (where the screws are).

The main difference is that my chair has a fold to separate the backrest from the headrest, that part looks a little complicated.

So to avoid sewing the seat cover, I just used gorilla glue to attach one piece of velcro to the leads and another piece of velcro to the center of the fabric.

I put the fabric on the right side of the seat and it looked like this, then folded the sides and pleated (same as the seat part)

Sew the pleats and sew the velcro that I started with and the cups come out again, but I can’t use the elastic in this case because that would expose the back. .

So I put the fabric on the back again, but this time with the wrong side facing out (so I could flip the flip over) and put the second piece of fabric on the back.
