How Much Fabric To Cover Tufted Chair – “Without extra back cushion” describes hard back furniture. You sit on fabric-covered padding attached to a frame with no additional cushions. The fabric panel can be applied to a smooth back and similar to the so-called “plain back”.
Variations on the thick back design were created for many different reasons – just one being that sometimes ‘simple’ is simple! The three most common enhancements to simple are: buttons, channels and tufts.

Here, the fabric buttons are attached to a strong thread that pulls through the padding. They are stretchy enough to slightly reduce the smoothness of the fabric. Buttons are often used with less pressure on the padding to give a stronger feel. They also prevent twisting or wrinkling by using a wider area of fabric. You can see the pattern and compression in the picture. Plain backs and buttons go well with many fabric backgrounds, although buttons will change a more traditional pattern.

Here, the back padding is organized into a series of channels or pockets. The support fabric is placed on the seat and the tube is marked. It is then removed from the seat and the cover is cut and sewn to the back. Some slacks are designed to create ‘pockets’ which are then filled with padding.
The channel should not be deep or deep. The technology used and the choice of filling can provide a wide and flat channel. These seats have a nice slanted or fluted design that indicates the sweep of the frame. The channel is flat and shallow.
As with high chairs, regular narrow patterns and lines are not the best fabric choices for upholstery. Pipes often slope from bottom to top and these patterns will be unevenly spaced – especially in narrow horizontal repeats. Solids, florals, and other random patterns work well – like the one below, the most powerful form of communication.
Another type is tufting. Take the button mentioned above and pull it deep into the padding. The fabric will wrap around the button. Master poker (all of them in some way) and you have Tuft. Some are sewn, some are layered and others need a special type of padding underneath.

Skirts with tails are attractive and are often worn with a deep curve in the back or mixed with folded arms. They take curved backs with colorful padding. Tufts can also be sturdy, with strong padding and deep buttons.
Because fabric pinches and creases, regular patterns (think grid width), stripes, and contrasting patterns don’t work well when controlled. The tufting pattern clashes with the surface of the fabric, creating a mess. Tone-on-tone-on-tone or monochrome patterns work well. Botanical clusters, vine patterns and other random patterns also work well. Solids look good and small print can work. Tight clothes just look good.
Sometimes, rarely, a regular overlapping pattern can allow for clipping. On the lower seat, the large pattern of the padding and the nature of the pins allowed the fabric pattern to match the fabric pattern. A type of 3D mosaic. Fortunately, the fabric is very soft.
