Here we show you how to re-upholster a chair with a ‘drop-in’ or ‘screw-on’ seat – a style shared by many benches and stools. The base of the seat can be made of different materials: solid wood, plywood, pegboard and others. Seats are usually removable but can be glued or inserted. The pad can be foam, cotton or other natural materials.

All staplers shown will do the trick. The question is: How hard do you have to work – and squeeze – to ‘do the trick’? Your decision to buy a stapler also depends on a few other factors, including how often you’ll use it, what else you can use it for—and whether you need a good excuse to buy an air compressor.

Hand Stapler: This will give your arm a workout, and you’ll sometimes have to use a hammer to drive the staple all the way through, but you can still get great results. Make sure you place the nose of the stapler firmly against the seat base when you pull the trigger.

We used one for our project and it worked flawlessly. You still have to press the nose firmly against the fabric and plywood to seat the staples properly – but it’s easier by hand. As a bonus, some models are also 3/4-inch round. And short brad nails.

If you spend hours stapling, invest in a pneumatic stapler. These staples are loaded with the snap of a finger and allow you to be extremely precise in the placement of your staples. Some tools run the brad nail up to 1-1/4 inches. You will also need an air compressor to operate this type of stapler.

When you buy, look for ‘upholstery grade’ fabric for strength and stain resistance. Fabric prices vary widely; You can find something in the bargain bin for $5 or spend 10 times more. We bought our fabric, foam and batting at a fabric store. For the soil cover, we used landscape fabric from Home Center.

Remove the staples with a small, flat-tip screwdriver and pliers or side cutters. Remove the upholstery and cushion material.

Our seats, for example, were made of a pegboard-like material secured to a 1×3 framework covered with horsehair. Someone had already gone over the old fabric and reupholstered the chairs. Expect the unexpected and adjust your game plan accordingly. If you are recreating more than one chair, the number of each chair and seat; That way, the screw holes will line up when you reinstall the seat. There are special tools just for sewing upholstery staples or tack, but you can get by with basic hand tools. Note: Old, boring side cutters are fine. They hold staples well but they don’t cut.

Remove the cushion and inspect the seat. If the wooden base feels solid, use it again. If it’s broken, use it as a template to create a new one. We used a sander to grind the edges to match the old profile. Draw the seat on top of the foam and line it up with a marker. Use a serrated bread knife to cut just inside the line.

Cut the batting so that it extends 4 inches from all sides of the seat. Then drive a staple on each side to hold the foam in place.

Determine the best layout for your content; Be sure to line up any patterns or lines correctly. Place the edge of the seat on your work surface and then run a staple down the middle of the front and back.

Working from the center, install the staples from the front as you gently pull the material with your hands. Stop 2 inches from the edge. Flip the set several times as you go to test the pattern. Repeat the process on the back corner and side. Place the batting — 4 inches wider in all directions than the size of your chair seat — on a flat work surface, then place your foam and seat on top. Gently spread the batting and run a staple along each edge.

Flip the seat over, then center your luggage on top. Cut the material so that you have at least 4 inches of lift in each direction around the bottom of the chair. With the seat facing up and the front edge hanging over the work surface, drive a staple through the bottom to hold the material in place. Rotate the seat 180 degrees, then pull back in the same way.

Check your pattern alignment once, then rotate the set. Starting with the front center staple and working toward the edges, use the palm of your hand to gently pull the material apart, then run the staple every 2 inches. Place the staple within an inch of the edge and secure the batting and fabric. at the same time. Use the whole hand to tighten the material, not just the fingers. This way you will avoid some dips and pickers in the sample.

Turn over the seat repeatedly, check for straightness of the pattern; It’s easier to flip and check than to go back and pull the staples. Our expert flipped the set and checked the pattern a dozen times while pulling each corner. Stop stapling 2 inches from each corner. Secure the back edge in the same way, expanding the material slightly as you work. Then complete the sides, check the pattern again and again.

Remove excess batting and spray so you don’t have unwanted lumps in the corners.

Make a ‘butterfly corner’ by tucking in the middle first, then folding and gluing the material on each side. Turn the seat over and run the staple to keep the edge tight.

After trimming the excess fabric and batting, add the dust cover. For this project, we used landscape fabric. The clay cover hides the edges of the hidden fabric very well. If the edges of your seats are hidden by the frame, you can create a simple, single-fold ‘hospital corner’. But in most cases, the front edges will be exposed and look better with ‘butterfly edges’.

Remove excess batting and material from the corners, then turn the seat right side out and experiment with some corner tucks. Fold the center inward, then overlap each side on that fold. When the edge looks straight and tight, turn the seat over and pin the fold in place.
