How To Cover A Chair With Piping – In October, my 22-year-old daughter Andrea came to me and said “Mom, I need you to return some dining room chairs for my daughter-in-law as a Christmas present”. “I don’t know how to upholster the chairs, Andrea,” I said politely. He said: Mother, you are Charso’s sister! What do you mean you don’t know how to put a dining chair back?”
This girl It’s hard for her to say “no”. Most likely because of his sweet nature and brown eyes. I can’t believe he’s been married for a year already.

So I agreed and said “well let’s try this”. And we did. I must say, as it seems, the reconstruction takes time and patience, but it is worth it. It can save you hundreds of dollars to do it yourself! I took lots of pictures to show you the process. There are probably a few too many, so scroll down if you’re frustrated :). I tend to explain things more! Bottom line, I know you can do it, because I’ve done it, and I’ve never done it! I am so excited as I type this!!!

First of all, I just didn’t do it (if the seats were mine, I probably would!!). I spent a few hours at Jack Do It Upholstery in Salt Lake City learning the basics. A big salute to them! The owner, Jack, is my friend Jane’s father. Jane gave me a tour of the place and I watched them do amazing things! Jose, one of the employees, was very good at teaching me how to sew the fabric on the chair. It’s a good thing I speak Spanish otherwise I wouldn’t have learned much :). I asked Jose a lot of questions. He had a lot of patience. We sat together for one (which means he did 90% and I did the rest) then I was alone for the other 7 seats.
Jane showed us how she cut the fabric. Make sure and cut straight, especially if your fabric has a pattern. Leave about 3 inches for stapling. A standard size dining room generally requires a 27 inch square canvas. 3/4 yard should cover two seats.
Okay, let’s go. First I used a screwdriver to remove the seat from the seat frame. It is attached with only 4 screws. Then we remove the staples from the bottom of the seat and remove the existing fabric. This part was not very interesting. It became Andrea’s job, yes… you can use a staple remover and some nose pads (pictured below), and just remove the staples. If the steel is broken and some of it remains in the seat, you can knock it out with a hammer (Jane’s tip). Be careful with this!
We decided to keep the existing foam but wash the wooden seat so that we have clean wood to reattach the seat (jack tip).

1. First draw a line down the middle of the set (from top to bottom) to mark the center. You can (sort of) see the line I drew in the image below. This line will help you keep the pattern straight. A line is not necessary if you are using a solid color.
2. Fold the fabric over the seat and pull it fairly tight, keeping the seat flat. Place a paper clip on the line. Attach again on the opposite end.
3. Join other places. Remember to tighten the fabric before tucking. Now your fabric is nice and straight with just four staples.
3. You will take one from the other corner. Pull the edge of the fabric tightly under the edge and pin it.

4. Now you will go from the middle of the staple towards the corner you stapled. Always fold tightly and be sure to smooth the fabric on the outer edge of the seat.
5. Do the same with the piece on the other side of the corner always working from the staple in the middle of the corner.
Tips from Jose: Always hang from the middle to the edge. Do not “finish” the corner until both adjacent sides are first together. This causes all the wrinkles to soften and push to the edge.
You can trim the excess fabric as you go, especially when you finish the edges to reduce bulk. Before you know it, you’re done and ready to attach the pipe!
How To Make Upholstery Piping: 13 Steps (with Pictures)
Jane sewed us a pipe (bless her!) and Jose taught me how to put it on. Here’s a video tutorial I put together with my sister!
Pin the edge of the seat close to the seam, close enough that the seam will not show, but the tube will.
Always start behind the seat to make your seam less visible. See how I’m holding up my finger in the picture below? Here’s how Jose taught me to do it so the barrel stays straight as you go. Grab, snap and tilt the entire edge of the seat. You don’t have to worry about pattern matching. It is a pure coincidence that it matches the type of model in the picture!
Turn the seat occasionally as you go to make sure the tube is visible but not the seam.

When you are ready to finish, cut the excess closed so that the two ends are close together but not overlapping.
Finally, you can cover the whole thing with black mesh. This is optional. This gives the chair a clean look and it doesn’t look so scary when you turn the chair upside down (Jose tip). Just a few staples will hold it in place.
Do and do! Now do this a few times until all your spots are done! 🙂 It took about 45 minutes per seat. Probably closer to 30 minutes as I get a lot of practice!
When I finished, we put the chairs back together and admire our work. Seriously, so helpful! And think of all the money we saved! Mother-in-law Andrea loved her Christmas present!
Upholstering My First Chair
I’m sorry I didn’t take a picture of these seats earlier. Trust me, they look better now than ever. Years of wear and tear, spills and stains can make you think you need new furniture. But now this classic, traditional dining set is as good as new and ready for years of use!
Let me know if you have any questions. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll ask Jane! 🙂 How was your weekend? We had a nice and relaxing two days, met up with some old friends and took our folks to see the Lori Caves. Although this was my 5th or 6th time visiting the nearby Skyline Drive, I never tire of it. If you haven’t been to these caves you should; It is the largest such cave in the eastern United States. You really can’t put into words how beautiful it is. Lake sleeps in the caves;
Back to today’s post, we have another chair tutorial, on how I sew a chair cushion. As I mentioned before, this is not what I would call a beginner sewing project. Nor is it the hardest thing in the world. But you need some patience and planning to get this baby going.
Fabric – I got the fabric back from Mary Joe in Charlotte in November and completely forgot how many yards I had.
