How To Cover A Office Chair With Fabric – If you don’t like your generic desk chair, this post is for you. I’m sharing how I transformed a boring (but incredibly comfortable) desk chair with a custom cover and some spray paint.
Also, be sure to check out updates at the bottom that share how the seat looks after two years of use.
How To Cover A Office Chair With Fabric
Last Christmas, my in-laws gave Ken and me a matching table chair. There was only one and it was pretty broken.

I love it because it’s so comfortable (I mean SO) and actually one of the best I’ve ever had.
But it’s all dark and rough and feels like it’s going to be stuck in a hot and sick day when you wake up 😛
So the other day I decided to clean it with a polka dot and spray primer and paint.
My main idea was to make a cover that could be easily removed and washed. As long as it is cloth, it will get dirty.

The back is velcro and the seats are made of rubber, so they can be removed later.
It had some training wear on the underside of the seat armrests, so it was a great time to upgrade a bit.
I’m working in the sewing room at Office Craft, so I’ll be showing you all the pieces I’ve been working on (I currently have 3 more semi-finished projects).
Every seat is different, so here are all the general pointers if you want to upgrade yours.

For the cover, use about 4 meters of outer cotton canvas (but you will need to measure the height of the back and seat, don’t worry about the width) + about 1 meter of velcro and about 1 meter of 1/2 inch elastic.
First, we need to identify the surface to be painted. In my case I have a piece of plastic and a piece of metal.
So I bought separate sprays specifically for metal and plastic to make sure every surface was covered in the best possible way.
Chairs must be disassembled using the tools provided. In my case, the seat is designed to be assembled with an Allen key.

Separate all the different parts so you can spray according to the ingredients. Then make the seat cover, backrest and armrest.
Only the armrests don’t make for an easily removable cover (for washing) but mine doesn’t have room to fit anything so if you add rubber to the bottom like a seat, there’s no place to attach it to the armrest.
It’s simply attached, so when you need to wash it, remove the stapler and start again when it’s clean.
For the leaf, I put the cover on the other side of the fabric so that it is shaped to fit (this way you will see the leaf closed as it was when it was finished).

I measured 5 inches from the top edge of the sheet (which will be the elastic edge) when folded (remember the sheet is backwards).
Then fold the corners and pin them firmly (you can see in the picture below that they are already sewn for the back) and sew the folds (because of the ), the bottom is better.
Sewing on the sides makes it bowl-shaped and helps it stay on the sheets.
Make a 2-inch fold across the top of the bowl, leaving a small opening for the rubber to go in and sew. Tie a knot in the rubber band to complete the fold.

Now you have a seat cover, but for a chair like mine, you need to drill a small hole in the side (where the screws are inserted).
The main difference is that my chair has a fold to separate the back and headrests, which makes that part look difficult.
So I used Gorilla glue to glue the Velcro to the top and Velcro on the other side to the center of the fabric so the cover doesn’t have to be sewn to the chair.
Place the fabric on top of the leaf with the right side of the leaf facing out and fold the sides together (as you did with the leaf pieces)

I sew the fold and sew the Velcro tape attached first, making it a bowl shape again.
So I put the fabric over the back again, but this time with the other side up (so I can flip the cover inside out) and put the second fabric on the back.
Instruction! Remember that the slip will easily slide off your back as long as you shape the top and not the bottom.
After putting the two pieces together and trimming off the excess, I sewed them together and added 10 inches of Velcro to the bottom center so I could fold the sides and close the back seat under the paddy field.

As with the seat, I had to drill holes for the screws to go into the armrest. I zigzag around it so it doesn’t fall off when I wash it.
In the picture below you can see how the sides are folded and secured using Velcro on each end (top and bottom)
It annoys me that I have to let go of my hands every time I wash the covers, but on the other hand, I can do that instead of cleaning them and throwing them in the washing machine when they get dirty.
Although Curly often played with my feet and his little paws scratched the underside, there was not a scratch on the paint. It was incredible.

We’ve also added an update with a picture of the back, so scroll down!
Cleaning the place is a hassle, so I highly recommend making a washable cover – hehe.
Ken is laughing at my chair now shouting “I belong to Joy”, but I’m fine with that!
Hopefully in the future Ken will accept my proposal to slightly modify the chair =]

Edited to add – 12/9/2013 It’s been about 2 years since I updated this chair and I still have some really good ones! Here is a picture of the chair a year and a half after I made the cover! I washed it several times and the paint on the chair is still almost perfect =]
Thank you for your cooperation in collecting chairs. I have a few questions about the seat top being attached with Velcro. Is it right under the padded headrest and the top and bottom of the seat? I’m also curious about the solder on the lid. After attaching the cover, do you sew it or just fold it with Velcro? I found it and really like the result! Sounds very simple, right? I would love to see a video of you doing this! Thanks again!
I love how you did “great” with that chair. You put together the chairs and instructions very well. Thanks for sharing. But let’s just say he’s frugal. He just brought me this office chair for my sewing room. Someone dropped it and I’m sure he picked it up. Thanks Konmari
One day when I was walking into my sewing room ready to “do some work” I noticed this chair hole and the beautiful tasteful fabric I bought for my sofa cushions (this was the last one. Didn’t work for the purpose of the room. ) . I can’t finish any work until I do this! What I mean by “this” is this very nice chair cover! It only takes 30 minutes and has less than a yard of fabric and stretch. I show you an easy way to make your own seats.
