How To Cover A Patio Chair Cushion – This month we’re focusing on cushion covers, so I wanted to take a closer look at how to make outdoor furniture covers.

At Lazy Susan we have a range of amazing cushions specially designed to go perfectly with all styles of seating and outdoor seating.

We recently talked about cleaning and maintaining outdoor furniture cushions in our article, so I won’t repeat myself. However, you can easily remove the foam fabric via the zipper to wash, repair and refresh as needed.

Our collection of outdoor cushions can also be paired with our Lazy Susan chairs, benches and chairs.

That way, even if the wind picks up, they won’t fly away or slide around while you’re sitting. An important feature that many people do not pay attention to when buying or building something new.

I’m sure we have a great selection of outdoor colors, but you can liven things up and give our furniture your own personal touch.

You may even have a collection of pillows where the pillows are still in good condition, which we often find, but the covers are slightly worn.

Outdoor fabrics have come a long way in the more than ten years I’ve been in the outdoor furniture industry.

In fact, during this time there was an entire furniture boom – from street rugs and curtains to couch and sofa cushions.

The quality of fabric has increased by the hour, not by the day, thanks to brands like Sunbrella, who are at the forefront of technical innovation and creative textile design.

As we spend more time indoors (especially in 2020) and in our gardens, there is an increasing demand to make our outdoor spaces as ‘liveable’ as possible.

In the UK we have always lagged behind outdoor living, we just don’t have the climate. However, this has changed significantly in recent years. We want to bring the inside out and vice versa.

In fact, as a leap forward in our industry, many interior furniture manufacturers are using outdoor fabrics for items intended for the interior of our homes.

We may have played it a little safe at Lazy Susan. However, our pillow collection is based on what’s on sale. Who says it doesn’t change, we always look forward.

Also, if you want to be more fashionable, then making your own hats is a great way to achieve this.

You don’t need to be a master with a needle and thread, if you can draw a straight line on a sewing machine, you’re good to go.

In fact, this article I’m about to share has some great videos that will help even a newbie like me get great results!

Admittedly, cushions are quick and easy to make and perfect for brightening up garden furniture…

Slip stitch is basically an invisible stitch. This is especially useful for covering holes in pillows and soft toys, then cover the outer seams for a nice finish.

The disadvantage is that it is permanently sewn. If that’s not a problem, this is the easiest of the different methods we’ll cover today.

The video above from Rokolee DIY gives you a good basic overview, and the “How to Make a Pillow” article on gathered.com has step-by-step instructions.

For sewing machine beginners, this tutorial and video is for you. The envelope panels are removable so you can take them out and put them in the washing machine if needed, but they don’t require sewing the dreaded zipper! This sewing tutorial from Ian Newton of Newton Custom Interiors explains how easy they are to make.

Button pillows are another popular decorating style. If you’re going to go this route, I’d go with some big, bright buttons to make a statement design. This step-by-step video from Debbie Shore will show you how to make beautiful quilt covers.

We have a great video from Treasury that shows you how to make a zipper pillow that even beginners can sew. All you need to do is cut 2 pieces of fabric the same size as your foam pad, or add a 1/2 inch seam allowance to fit it for a softer cover that’s easier to clean.

On the other hand, the video below is for those who already have these skills, or if you really want to challenge yourself. After all, it should be fun, a little practice can lead to good results. Also, don’t be afraid to experiment. Before buying an expensive outdoor fabric, buy some unbleached cotton to play with.

This video from an online fabric store shows you how to make a box-style cushion that’s perfect for a variety of garden seating areas:

Finally, we have a great video by Patricia from Living Even Keeled showing how to make outdoor seat cushions using glue and velcro.

As mentioned above in the zipper method section, if you’re new to pillow making, practice with a scrap fabric like the one above from On Trend Fabrics on Amazon before starting.

Also, any pillow or rectangle that isn’t a perfect square, like the rounded backs we offer at Lazy Susan, will need a template or pattern to make sure the pillow is the right shape to fit the chair.

Don’t throw away the old ones while they are in their original form… You can use them to make a mold! But over time, the pillows wear out and lose their shape. If so, show them the container and measure the furniture for a perfect fit.

One trick I use is to place a sheet on the seat of the chair and press it against the bottom of the chair. Press it firmly on the outer edge, draw the outer edges of the seat where you want the edge of the custom pillow and cut out the shape.

If you’re not sure, a quick Google search will explain how to make a pillow pattern better than I can.

One last tip I can give is that if you are making the garden chair cushions sold at Lazy Susan, make sure you attach them to the chair so they slide around.

My first story: I have wanted rocking chairs on my front porch for years. Greg bought us two beautiful wicker chairs a few weeks ago. They were brown, which we didn’t have at home, so she bleached them for me. But the cushions were still the dull beige that went with the chairs. I’m not a beige girl. So we went to the fabric store and picked out a bright and cheerful open stripe. But the fabric sat on me for a while, it didn’t work at all. Sound familiar?

But yesterday was a beautiful day and I knew it was time to restore those ugly pillows. It took just over an hour to restore both field pads from start to finish. This is a super easy stitch…and if you don’t want to sew, there are options for that too. And my deck pillows weren’t even perfectly square. I’ll show you how to quickly and easily restore your patio cushions!
