How To Cover Outside Chair Cushions Cheap – Josh made some amazing benches for us to sit on and we decided to add some plush outdoor cushions to make the seating area even more comfortable.
First I measured the width and depth of each chair to see how big the cushions should be. The pillow I bought was 4 inches long, so I knew that number would be the length of my pillow.

To measure the fabric for the pillow panels, take the width and depth measurements and add 1″ to both numbers for a 1/2″ seam allowance all around. These measurements are for the panel at the top and bottom of the pillow.

To determine the length of the side panel, add the actual measurements (numbers before extra seam inches) for all four sides of the main panel together.
Add 1″ to this amount to allow for a 1/2″ seam allowance. The length of your longest side panel is the length of the padded pillow with a 1″ plus 1/2″ seam allowance.
To join the long row of side panels and create one large continuous loop around the edge of the pillow, fold the panel in half (right sides facing), then sew 1/2″ from the edge to join the edges.
Align the edges of the side panel of the fabric with the edge of the top panel (right sides together) and press the seam in place.

Pin the bottom panel to the side panel in the same way as the top panel and make notches in all corners.
Before you sew the entire bottom panel, you’ll want to add a zipper to one of the edges so you can insert the pillow stuffing.
Place the zipper face down on the right side of the fabric at the end of the bottom panel. Position the zipper so that the zipper is inserted 1/2″ from the edge.
Repeat the pinning and sewing process on the other side of the zipper so you have a working zipper attached.

Now you can hem the entire bottom panel (starting at the end of the zipper and ending when you reach the beginning of it).
Be sure to leave the zipper open a few inches before sewing it all the way so you can come back later! Turn the pillow cover right side out and you’re ready to add the stuffing!
Use a ruler and marker to measure the correct width of your pillow stuffing.* If you can’t buy a long enough pillow in one piece, use as many pieces as you need to fill the length of the pillow.
*NOTE. I would highly recommend making the width and height of the insert larger than the dimensions of your actual cover (maybe add an inch to both). This way, the insert will fit perfectly into the cover and you will get a perfect pillow.
How To Make A Chair Cushion
Now, I’ve heard some people use jigsaws or electric turkey shears to cut the foam and stuffing, but what worked best for me was a clear saw. You’re amazing, aren’t you?
The saw was able to cut easily, but I used fabric scissors to clean up the edge a bit.
Once my filling was decided, we folded the filling in half like a taco shell and put it in a pillowcase. Use the waterproof spray to seal the fabric and you’re done!
Throw in some outdoor cushions (or you can make your own) some concrete planters, an outdoor rug and your place is ready to go!

A few years ago we found our teak furniture on Craigslist for only $150. Since then it has been sitting under our covered porch just as nice as we found it. We started restoring the teak patio set last year but never finished it.
Finally, when the children have grown up, we were able to devote time to the improvement and renovation of the small house. The first place we wanted to start this year was on our patio deck, updating the cushions.
After shopping at Walmart, Target, Home Stores (which usually have a variety), Home Depot, and Ballard Designs, I couldn’t find replacement covers or full pillows in the pattern I wanted or the price I wanted. wanted to On the low end, it costs $25 to replace a pillowcase at Walmart. They ended up asking $100 for the pillow. When I took it to a thrift store, the estimate was $350 for 6 pillows without the fabric.

I knew I could find a better way to get the look we wanted for our four outdoor pillows without paying a premium price.

Personally, I don’t think they add to the clean look of the zipper, but that’s just my opinion. Also, I did not find any other woven covers, it seemed that all the pillows were woven or made of velvet.
My lesson is about any channel that starts. If you ONLY know how to sew a straight stitch, this tutorial is for you. If you don’t want to piece together fabric scraps to make something, this outdoor pillow sewing project is for you.

Below I share instructions on how to make a pillow cover from a single fabric panel. The hardest part is finding the right measurements, which I’ll explain below.
To cover your outdoor cushions you need to decide if you want a fabric that is weather resistant or if you want to use a fabric protector (which is what I used) to protect it from the weather.
You can use Sunbrella fabric (expensive) or get this laminated linen fabric. They are usually pre-made and guaranteed to be waterproof, so you don’t have to worry.
I would strongly advise against this when using regular fabric. That being said though, my fabric was cheap, and since it was my first big project, I can’t imagine doing this project again in the future, so I’m totally fine with taking that risk. I use a fabric protector

You know how much I love neutrals, so if you’re into that sort of thing, here are some of my favorite fabrics:
I recommend choosing zippers that are longer than the width of the pillow. The reason is that this will allow your pillows to move easily instead of fighting with the upholstery, pillow and cover.
I’d also go for non-sporty zippers (the kind you’d find on a jacket where they split. Choose an unsplit zipper that’s water resistant.
Tip for using zippers on outdoor cushions: Remove the zippers from old cushions and reuse them on new ones. Grab a seam ripper, go to town on the zipper, recycle, and rock it!
