How To Make A Chair Cover From A Sheet – If generic desk chairs aren’t your cup of tea, this post is for you! I’m going to share how I transformed a boring (but very comfortable) desk chair with a custom cover and spray paint.

Also, be sure to check out the update at the bottom where I share what the chair looks like after two years of use.

Last Christmas my partner gave Ken and I matching desk chairs. We only have one and it is very broken.

I love it because it’s so (I mean VERY) comfortable, actually one of the best I’ve ever owned. My back is getting better with this chair!

BUT it’s all dark and leathery, on hot days I feel like I’m going to rave and it hurts to stand 😛

So the other day I decided to dress it up with polka dot fabric and some spray primer and paint.

My main idea is to make a cover that is easy to remove and wash, because while the fabric is there, it gets dirty.

I used Velcro and seat rubber for the back so I could remove it later.

The chair has some touch ups on the underside of the armrest, so it’s a good time to give it a little update.

I’m working on the craft office sewing room, so I’ll show you all the pieces I’m working on (I currently have 3 left).

Since every chair is different, I will give you some general tips if you want to improve your chair.

I used about 4 yards of outdoor cotton canvas for the cover (but you should measure the height of the back and seat – don’t worry about the width) + about 1 yard of Velcro and about 1 yard of 1/2 inch rubber. .

First you need to identify the surface you are going to paint, in my case I have plastic and metal sheets.

So I bought a spray primer specifically for metal and another for plastic so that all surfaces are covered in the best possible way.

You will need to take the seat apart using any of the tools provided, in my case the seat is ready to be assembled with a hex wrench.

I separated all the different parts so I could spray them by ingredients. And make covers for the seat, back and arms.

The armrest is the only part that I can’t easily cover (for washing purposes) because I don’t have room for anything and if I put rubber under it like I did with the t-seat, I won’t. there is room to tighten it back to the sleeve.

So I just staple the clothes so when I have to wash them I have to take the staples with me and when they are clean I repeat the process.

For the seat, I put the part I’m going to cover on top of the wrong fabric so I can shape it to fit (so you can see the seat closed as it is when it’s done).

I measured 5 inches for the crease (that’s the rubber edge) from the top edge of the seat (remember the seat reclines).

I then folded the corner and pinned it securely (you can see it’s already sewn for the back as well in the picture below) and then sewed over the fold. This makes the folds at the bottom (due to flexibility) better.

Once the sides are sewn, you will finish the shape of the bowl so that it stays on the seat.

You need to make a 2 inch fold at the top of the bowl, sew it, leave a small piece open to insert the elastic inside. Tie a knot in the elastic and complete the folded seam.

You now have a cover for your chair, but if your chair is like mine, you will need to make a small hole in the side (where the screws are).

The main difference is that my chair has a fold to separate the back from the headboard, that part looks a bit tricky.

So to avoid putting the cover on the chair, I just attached a piece of velcro using Gorilla Glue and then pinned another piece of velcro down the middle of my fabric.

I put the fabric on the right side of the seat outside, how it will look, and then take the sides and make a fold (just like the seat part)

I sewed on top of the piece and also sewed on the piece of Velcro attached at the beginning, the bowl shape came together again, but in this case I couldn’t use elastic because that would mean the back would be open. . .

So I put the fabric on the back again, but this time wrong side out (so I have a lining on the inside) and put another piece of fabric on the back.

ADVICE! Remember that as long as you build the top and not the bottom, your slide will easily come out the back.

I stapled the two pieces together and cut off the excess, then sewed and placed a 10″ piece of Velcro in the bottom center so I could fold the sides and close the rear seat bottom cover. Like the seat part, I had to make holes for the screws that go into the arms, I zigzag around them so they don’t break when it’s time to wash them.

In the picture below, you can see how I just folded the edges and secured them using velcro pieces on both ends (top and bottom)

I know it would be a pain to open the sleeves every time I need to wash the cover, but on the other hand, I’d rather do it and be able to throw it in the machine – wash it if it’s dirty than spot clean. . .

No scratches on the paint, although Curly has been playing with my feet a lot and his little feet are scratching the bottom so that’s good.

I also added an update with more wallpapers, so scroll down!

I would definitely recommend making a cover that you can wash, because for me spot cleaning is just a pain – hehe.

Ken laughed a little about how my chair now screams “I’m Joey’s” but you know it’s great!

I just hope that in the future Ken will consider my offer to modify his chair a bit =]

Edit to add – September 12, 2013 I updated this chair almost 2 years ago and it’s still holding up great! Since I had a lot of requests, I added more pictures of the chair, especially the bottom. Here is a picture of the chair a year and a half after making the cover! I have washed it several times and the color on the chair is still almost perfect =]

Thank you very much for your help in returning the chair. I have a few questions about the top of the seat where you put the velcro. Is it just under the padded headboard and the top and bottom of the chair? Also, I’m curious about the cover part. Do you sew it on or just velcro and tape after the cover is attached? I was going to pattern and do a lot of work and sewing to cover my chair, but I found your site and love your products! You make it sound so easy! We’d love to see a video of you doing it! Thank you once again!

I love what you did with this chair “brilliant” very well putting the chair together as well as the instructions. Thank you for sharing. I each have a pillow; but they feel too much for the depth of the seat. Pillows are not out yet; but I need to find a small one. However, I think something placed behind the chair would have a nice effect without taking up space from the seat.

The fabric is leftover upholstery I picked up at Hancock Fabrics. I always check their scrap bin – especially for printable fabrics. Many times nothing is pleasant; but sometimes you get a steal for beauty like this dress.

Since I just shared a tutorial on how to use Heat-n-Bond on tones, I’ll skip the details and give you some pictures of the process and the finished product.

If I can find some small pillows to add eventually, that would be great. Otherwise, I’m very happy with how this end of the dining room came together. The
