How To Make A Cover For A Chair – If regular seats are not your cup of tea, this article is for you! I’m going to share with you how I transformed my boring (but very comfortable) couch with custom upholstery and some spray paint.

Also, check out the update below where I share how the chair looks after two years of use.

Last Christmas my relatives gave Ken and me matching chairs. We only had one and it was very broken.

I love it because it is (I mean SO) comfortable, actually one of the best things I own. My back feels so good with this chair!

But everything is dark and leather, I feel stuck on it on hot days and it hurts when I stand 😛

So the other day I decided to make it with polka dot fabric and some primer and paint.

My main idea was to make a cover that I could easily take off and wash, because as long as the fabric is there, it gets dirty.

I used velcro for the back and elastic for the seat so I could remove them later.

The chair was sporting some wear on the bottom of the arms, so it was a good time to upgrade it a bit.

I’m working in my office-craft room, so I’ll show you all the pieces I’m working on (I have 3 half projects right now)

Since every chair is different, I will give you all the general instructions if you want to update your chairs.

For the upholstery, I use about 4 yards of cotton outer fabric (but have to measure the back and seat height – don’t worry about the width) + about 1 yard of velcro and about 1 yard of 1/2″ elastic .

First you need to determine the surfaces you want to paint, in my case I had plastic and metal parts.

So I bought a spray primer specifically for metal and another for plastic to cover each surface as best as possible.

You will need to disassemble your seat using whatever tools you brought with you, in my case this seat is ready to install with an allen wrench.

I separate all the different parts so I can spray them depending on the material. And make covers for the chair, back and armrests.

The gloves were the only parts that I couldn’t easily open the cover (to wash) because I didn’t have room for anything and if I added a bottom like a flexible seat, I didn’t want to have room to hang it. on a hand piece.

So I just staple the fabric, so when I need to wash it, I have to take the stapler, and when it’s clean, I repeat the process.

For the seat, I put the piece that was supposed to be covered on the wrong side of the fabric to fit (you can see the covered seat when it’s done).

I measured 5″ from the top edge of the seat (the edge that is elastic) to the top edge of the seat (remember the seat is set back).

After that, I made flaps on the edges and pinned them securely (you can see they are sewn from the back in the picture below) and then sewed on top of the flap. This greatly improved the bottom drop (due to flexibility).

After sewing the sides, you get the shape of the cup and how it will fit on the seat.

You will need to create a 2 inch seam at the top of your cup and sew it open leaving a small piece for the elastic to run through. Tie a knot in the elastic and finish the flap.

You now have a cover for your seat, but if your seat is like mine, you will need to make small holes in the sides (where the screws will go).

The main difference is that my chair had a box separating the back from the top, that part seemed complicated.

So to avoid sewing the seat cover, I glued a piece of velcro to the guide using gorilla glue and then glued the opposite side of the velcro to the center of the fabric.

I placed the fabric right side up on the seat, it will look like this, then I placed the sides and made the cover (like the seat part)

I sewed along the top of the flap and also sewed the velcro part that I attached before, I will get the cup shape again, but in this case I couldn’t use elastic because it means the bust is open.

So I put the fabric on top of my back piece again, but this time wrong side facing (so I could keep the back inside) and put another piece of fabric on the back.

Advice! Remember, as long as you shape the top and not the bottom, your hat will slide off easily.

I glued both pieces and cut off the excess, then sewed them together and added a 10″ piece of velcro to the bottom center so I could close the sides and close the back seat cover on the bottom.

As with the seat part, I had to drill holes for the screws going into the arm parts and zigzag around them to avoid them when it came time to wash them.

In the picture below you can see how I folded the sides and secured them using pieces of velcro on both ends (top and bottom).

I know it will hurt my hands to separate the sheets every time I wash them, but on the other hand, I love them, and if they get dirty I can throw them in the washing machine instead of cleaning them.

The color doesn’t scratch, although Curly has been playing with my legs a lot and scratching his little paws down, which is great.

I totally recommend making a washable cover because cleaning up stains is just a pain for me – hehe.

Ken got a bit of a laugh that my chair now screams “I’m Joey’s” but you know I think it’s cool!

I just hope Ken takes me up on my offer to modify his chair a bit in the future =]

Edit to add – September 12, 2013 I’ve been updating this chair for almost 2 years now and it still holds up great! Since I have so many requests, I will add more pictures of the seat, especially the lower back. Here are pictures of the chair a year and a half after making the cover! I have washed it several times and the color on the seat is still almost perfect =]

Thank you very much for your help in getting the course back. I have a few questions about the chair top that you put the velcro on. Was it just above the seat and below the wing? Also, I would like to know about the folds on the cover. Did you sew it on velcro or snap it in place after you installed the cover? I wanted to cover a pattern and a lot of sewing work, but I found your site and I love your results! You make it look so easy! I would love to see a video of this! Thanks again!

I love what you did with that chair, you put the chair together “completely” as well as with the instructions. Thanks for sharing. Do you remember the post I made when I first started blogging about how I transformed my lovely home office with fabric chairs. Well, this office chair decoration – now it is needed. About 6 years ago I covered a chair with a black and white print.

The back furniture held up very well – the seat was a very thin fabric that I glued on. It actually wore better than I expected, but it’s time to replace it to match the new color scheme of my craft room…aka my studio.

This black and white seat cover has served me well for many years… but it’s getting a little worn. Hello black and white chair.

Hello fresh summer colors! I found a woven cotton rug at HomeGoods for $7 and used it to make the back cover. The green fabric below is from Joanne.

I used cotton fabric for the seat and cotton fabric for the back of the chair.
