How To Make A Pillowcase Cover For Chair Cushion – These chair covers were a great way to start off the new year at our neighborhood elementary school! It is very convenient to have a pocket built for each group to place the scrolls.

I was recently appointed to the first presidency of my ward, and I love it! (You can learn more about the main body of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints here.)

I made these seat covers last week as a solution to two things: 1, we needed a better/easier way to track attendance records for each class. And 2, we needed some sort of seat marker to indicate where the classes would sit for New Year’s rehearsal.

I’ll be honest…it’s a little time consuming when you have to make one for every class in the school. But… it’s a unique project, and now you’ll have it for years to come! So I think it’s really worth the time!

Do you want to know the secret? Pillows! One of the women in my president’s office had a package of cheap pillows that she donated for this project. The fact that I had to cut them to size and sew the seam made it super quick!

Plus, the rest of the pillowcase was perfect for the pockets. Also, having a finished border was very helpful!

I was in a rush to get everything sewn up in time for church on Sunday so I didn’t take pictures of that part, but I’ll do my best to explain. Leave me questions in the comments though!

First, measure the back of the chair. I took my tape recorder to church the other night to do this (organist duties and church keys again).

As for the width of the seat covers, I decided that it would be better to leave the cushions as they are and do not worry about fitting them perfectly into the seats.

The pillows were almost double the size I needed, which was perfect. I decided to make chair covers out of pillow covers. This way I only need to finish the bottom edge of the seat cover.

Since I wanted 13.5″ seat covers and needed more length to cut and adjust the bottom edge, I needed to cut this long piece to 15″.

Use your support folders as a guide for how big to make a pocket. Then add enough length and width to cut the three unfinished pieces and turn them underneath.

The dimensions of the cutout I used for the pocket were 15″ x 10.5″. If you look at the picture again, you will cut it below the pillow (where it opens).

Using the measurements you chose above, cut the seat cover from the top of the cushion. To cut straight, I used my cutting mat, omnigrid ruler and rotary cutter. I highly recommend investing in this if you haven’t already!

From the remaining pillow, cut a 15″ x 10.5″ rectangular pocket piece leaving the bottom edge intact. If it’s convenient, you can cut the pillow along the seam before cutting the rectangle. Also, use a cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter for straight cuts!

Note: Now is a good time to add any details to the pockets, before sewing them to the seat cover. That’s when I made a freezer paper template and drew the team names on it. Of course, if I had a vinyl cutting machine, I would totally own one. One day I will get a Cricut Maker and projects like this will be so much easier! But until then… the paint works great!

Serge or zig zag the underside of the seat cover. Using a seam gauge, fold under the seam about 1 inch (so the seat cover is the desired height), press and sew a straight line all the way around. (Of course, any way you want to do or finish this line is fine!)

Again, using a seam gauge, place the pockets so that they are placed on the seat cover. (I decided to make a finished edge, the edge that was originally the bottom of the pillow, the top edge of the bag). Sew the sides and bottom, attaching the bag to the seat cover.

The front seat cover didn’t need a pocket which was nice. These “work” covers are the best for keeping track of kids!

These were totally worth the time it took to make them. We love them in our elementary classroom!

Let me know if you have any questions about this tutorial in the comments below. And, if you end up making your own chair covers, whether it’s for elementary school, the classroom, or anywhere else, I recommend starting with a pillow! Recycle the cushions the next time you want to dress up those fuzzy dining chairs. It’s the perfect back cover for a no-sew chair.

All you have to do is slide the pillow over the chair, let it sit, tuck the excess underneath or add a piece of ribbon to keep it in place. The most instant decoration!!!

You can find all kinds of pillows for a few dollars a pair at stores like Marshalls, Home Goods, TjMaxx, and Ross.

Easy To Sew Pillows

Get rid of wrinkles and slip a pillow over your chair. Depending on the length of the chair and the length of the pillow, you may attach the fabric to the bottom.

You can leave it tied and enjoy your new chair or you can wrap a pretty ribbon around the chair a few times and tie a knot.

Take it a step further and add decorative pins. The straps also help hold the fabric underneath.

Variation: This pose will give you more length in your back. Place the excess down to make a neat fold on the underside of the pillow and lift the bottom of the pillow. It looks like our yard has been revamped this summer to create a great place to relax or unwind. Family and friends can enjoy food, wine and outdoor games! Because our yard is big and sits behind a large open garden and playground, it has become a popular place for Mr. and his friends get together and play what they call “off-road” petanque. Then head back to the yard to play stairs or wash up before heading back to the deck for a snack!

After we are tired and we are dealing with all the projects in our budget in a minimal way! We made these chairs for the price of a can of paint and half price living room pillows from Target! What a difference Our patio chairs were embarrassing and replacing them wasn’t cutting it. I also got a deal on these pillows, but I needed 6 and they were out of stock. It was too late for me to ask my mother to sew as we had a meeting that was only scheduled for two days.

So Samantha and I put on our thinking caps and made these no-sew patio chair cushion covers. Even though I really wanted navy, Samantha found some cute patterned pillows for just $3.99 for a two pack!

Before the picture needs a moral, I think … you know, horror pictures, in the form of a sentence, are not suitable for all audiences!

I wasn’t sold on this pattern at first, but seeing it with the freshly painted table and chairs has grown on me! My pillow is 20 x 20 inches, so a regular pillow case works fine. Put the pillow in the pillow case…

It only took 10 minutes to make all 6 pillows for a total of $12.00! Add in the cost of spray paint to spray the chairs himself and it was about $25.00 to finish all 6 chairs!

Not so sad anymore, sit by my new harvest table! After doing this for my mother, Mr. I finally started building mine! I love how the look comes together. We moved our BBQ downstairs and the new table and chairs fit perfectly here! Someone asked me if we had all new chairs!

In fact, we easily sat 8 around the table by adding a chair on each side, even being able to get all the food on the table! No need for extra tables or up and down to move things! I wish I had taken a picture of this deck sooner! It was actually our large gas grill under the grill canopy and one area got damaged.

I may eventually return them or make new pillows out of the fabric, but I couldn’t be happier with my no-sew patio chair pillows this summer! We use cookies to improve it. By using our website, you accept our cookie policy. Cookie settings
