Loose Cover For Parker Knoll Wingback Chair – I knew someone was going to hit on my newly decorated Parker—now named Mr. Porter – but I thought it was Mr. M, not his legs!
Now it’s all done and I’m very happy with my first wing chair, freshly painted, waxed and upholstered. It took me about two months, but it’s only a couple of hours every Monday, so it’s really not too bad. I want it!! From floral silks from Portier in Willow to Castellani fabric in Deep Charcoal in Graphite, from Graphite Chalk Gray to Emile Lavendlin to antique gold upholstery on eBay.

If you like the shape of a chair or piece of furniture, don’t be deterred by the existing fabric or wood color – everything can be changed to your taste. Check out what Mr Portier looked like when I got him into a posh thrift store in Lancashire and believe me, it was pretty breathtaking too!

This is a small visual taste of the stages and processes. I took it apart first, documented the steps with my phone and how everything fits together. This was a great tip from my teacher, because then you don’t get the steps mixed up when putting the chair back together, or in the wrong order while learning. It was exciting to peel back the layers and see how the chair was made.
Then I put it back together with a lot of help from Andrea from Plus Polstery… what a patient lady she is. It’s good because I’ve decided to do everything myself and I’m such a perfectionist. “Cyan,” he told me quietly, “you can’t see that much,” when I got upset about a loose thread or a frozen head. Don’t get me started on the air-guided warhead – I want one!
Little did I know that the hard work, time and effort that goes into upholstering or reupholstering is such a skill and time-consuming task that I now look at full-time craftsmen in a completely different light. The steps below are just a few of what Mr. Portier and I went through, with thousands of staples and lots of swearing. To discover the secret, I didn’t make seat cushions, I threw them in the bin with a sewing machine. Get to know people with your skills and stick with it 😉 What do you think, thumbs up or not?
